atom & his package (3.24.03)
It's not bad enough that the music played before the show was bad (tacky rap with lyrics like: "stay off my dick" and "fuck a duck" repeated as many as 3 times during the course of the 3 minute song) but the first 3 bands that played had to be bad.

Grand Buffet was composed to two white guys trying really hard to rap well and failing. I thought one of the guys was okay, but the lyrics weren't very great. They had basic hip-hop beats (which weren't bad) until they paused them and the fat, ugly, stupid guy started beatboxing poorly. For shame, white boy. The only song of theirs I really liked was a joke song about kids going out to find a cat. It was really funny. Otherwise, I basically understand why most underground hip-hop stays so far underground: because it sucks.

Brazil played a boring, yet chaotic set. It was basic poser-hardcore punk. What do you expect? They were tolerable, just not talented in any way. Actually, the background music wasn't half bad (I refrain from saying "good" because I'm just not sure if it was) but the lyrics and vocals were so bland and unrefined.

We were fortunate enough to hear ANOTHER hip-hop band before the night was over from a guy named Sole. I guess he's a member of a more popular avant-garde hip-hop band called Anacon (who maybe is good). But seemed to me like Sole was just another disgruntled white boy with disgruntled white fans throwing down white culture. Part of his set was to throw your hands in the air and scream "the white man is the devil." He was white and most of the people chanting with him were white. I didn't understand. The only awesome part about his set was that he had an electric cellist perform with him, so I was concentrating on that. I'd say without the cellist, it would have sucked a lot more.

Atom came on stage looking, like my friend said, like a penguin. A short, stocky Jewish man with emo glasses coming on stage with just a guitar and a nice looking package. After all, it is Atom and HIS Package, a name stupidly given to his sampler. The thugs who were there for the hiphop left at this point, a visible change in the people at the show. He played a lot of stuff from his new album and "Redefining Music" in addition to the classics from all the other albums. He had a really great set, and he was a lot of fun... I just wish it wasn't 2.5 hours of CRAP before him.

I'd say that if you could see him without that crap, go. I just caution you to be ready to rock out HARD, because the prog-rock bordering between new wave and pop-punk (I dare to use that term in the most positive way imaginable) make Atom a sure-fire fun act to see.
