Okay, I'm admitting off the bat that no one I saw last night is extremely talented. However, it was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time... a very long time. The band Rooney started it all off. The five pretty boys of the band that I'm assuming is from California sounded like Phantom Planet a little bit. The poppy vocals and screaming girls reminded me of a simple pop group (not to mention their song "Pop Stars"). However, the band was just so goddamn lovable, with catchy guitars, nice vocals and the best pop sensibility I've seen life since Ben Kweller in November. The Donnas came next, with their trendy hair and outfits and an undeniable punk aura. They all were so damn cute, it was sickening (okay, not the bassist, she's always angry and screaming... seriously, look at any picture of her EVER, she never smiles, and her voice is so screechy). The 45 minute set contained somewhere around a 50/50 mix between old stuff and material from their new album. It's amazing how all their songs sounded the same, were about the same thing (drinking and/or having sex and dumping the guys the next day), but still were fun and exciting. There was such a catchy, enjoyable aspect to their performance, it was so wonderful. The crowd was just so damn receptive to them. The hightlight of the show for me, though, was "Not the One," a perfect example of a Donnas song off "The Donnas Spend the Night." OK Go headlined this though... and they were better than I expected. Full of keyboards the catchy songs ranged from throw your hands up anthems to quiet ballads. "Hello, My Treacherous Friends" was a definite hightlight of their set for me. But, what made everything PERFECT was their cover of the Smiths song, "Panic." Oh my God, it was heavenly. Manchester, we've found the new Morrissey. That was my night. |
