Eisley @ the metro (11-22-03)

It's a little embarrassing to have to go into the Metro box office and say: "Um, hi, can I have two tickets to Brand New?" Well, yeah, that's who Eisley was opening for. To be quite honestly, I feel no hatred towards Brand New. Their style of emo on their most recent album is at least unique and pleasant to listen to (my friend made me borrow the album, I SWEAR!… okay, so I asked). However, having the cute little Texas family band known as Eisley open was not exactly my ideal choice, but hey, they are a band who deserves to be popular.

I felt a little bad waltzing into the Metro 15 minutes before Eisley's set as dozens of Brand New fans were standing outside the club begging for tickets, probably offering hundreds of dollars (as I learned they were after I walked into the Riviera last year with an extra Alkaline Trio ticket).

I first heard Eisley last year as they opened up for Coldplay. I was confused at first by the elegant, nearly lullaby-like pop music. It was lush and dreamy, and craziest of all, it was coming from teenagers. The youngest member of the band is 15. Her sisters are somewhere around their late teens/early twenties, as is their brother and neighbor. So yeah, Eisley is a family band. A Texan family band who loves Jesus, Radiohead and coffee.

Their set was not filled with so many songs that I recognized, playing things largely off the new EP they were selling (record label suggested? probably) and off the upcoming album. It was kind of weird to see many people's reaction to the band, seeing as most of them came to BRING THE MOSH. Eisley, however, does not bring the mosh. The sister's voices combine into beautiful harmonies, which, while leaving a smile on my face, left some confused, and rightly so. After all, what was a band with such potential and talent doing playing with bands like Hot Rod Circuit? Eisley takes a lot of influence in Brit pop bands like Radiohead, Coldplay and Travis, but all share a love for more avant-garde music like Björk and Sigur Rós. I won't deny that I respected Eisley ten times more once I found this out, but the fact remains: lush, dreamy pop music is rare. Plus, with a band as dynamic as Eisley who can still hold their own live, well, that's a treasure.

Pick up their album. Tours seem to be rare for the band, unless of course you live in Texas, but if they do stop by, do see them. I love me some Eisley.

After their set I left. That caused some confusion among Brand New fans, but hey. Why stick around when I could go to cast parties??

Grade: A-
