hot hot heat @ the fireside (3.3.03)

Lying in States, the band who played with Cursive last time I saw them (and bashed desperately) have either a). grown on me or b). gotten good, or acceptable at very least. I once defined them as goth-core, but I'll now redefine them as neo-grunge-core. (Seriously, put neo/post/neu in front of any existing genre and end with the last sylable of a current genre and you arrive at a funny hybrid.) While the lead singer did look like Jesus, they're blend of hardcore with a sound more reminiscent of Peral Jam created a hard, yet nice vibe. The Watchers came next. The band looked like they were more ready to play at the Green Dolphin rather than the Fireside with jazzy suits, bongos, bassists and god knows what other jazz elements. The lead singer, perhaps a Jewish cassanova, was full of sexual innuendos while performing, but amazingly fun to watch. They were definetely a fun band to watch, but they're music wasn't all that memorable. They headline a show at the Fireside on March 28, though, should you be interested. Man, dancable jazz rock, not bad stuff there, just not great. Hot Hot Heat came on with an unexpected aura. With their attitudes, I thought they were another opener until they said "Hey, we're Hot Hot Heat from Vancouver." Playing a super short set(40 minutes, shortest set by main band ever), I still hadn't made up my mind if I should be in love with their funky keyboard rock or if I should be cautiously skeptical. Songs like "Naked in the City Again," "Get In or Get Out" and "Bandages." Songs from their earlier EP, "Knock Knock Knock" held a similar pop quality to them, but lacked a bit of the funkalicous charm present in the songs from their latest LP "Make Up the Breakdown." All in all, I good show for them, and I'd recommend seeing them should the chance arise. Not the best show I've seen, hard to follow up after seeing Zwan and Sleater-Kinney this year, but we'll see.
