Wow. So the girls of S-K played one of the best shows of the tour, obviously, because I have never seen such a receptive crowd or a more elated version of the early riot-grrrls. The band Sweet Heat opened things off with a more punk sound, sounding somewhat like the Sahara Hotnights-- Donnas-like lyrics with a more realistic punk attitude and general vibe. Sounding a little bit more like Bikini Kill with a far less feminist attitude, they were an enjoyable watch, perhaps a foreshadowing of seeing the Sahara Hotnights in a month. The Black Keys were the second opener, and Sleater-Kinney’s tourmates for the latest installment of the support for their acclaimed album One Beat. The Black Keys sounded somewhere in between a Pearl Jam-like grunge (who, by the way, S-K is opening for on a mini tour in the spring) and a blossoming blues-rock group (i.e. the White Stripes). Taking part in the guitar and drum revolution, their set did draw on just a tiny bit too long, as things began to sound repetitive. However, these homeboys from Akron, Ohio had several gems, such as “Have Love Will Travel.” But yet again, Sleater-Kinney remain to be the highlight of any show they could ever play. Opening with the most single-worthy song, “Oh!,” the girls of S-K sounded better than ever. Corin had an amazing voice, on songs such as “Faraway,” “One Beat,” and “Sympathy.” However, the band did play many of their old songs as well, largely from “The Hot Rock” and “Call the Doctor.” Of course, it’s very fun to watch these ladies since they’re just soooo damn beautiful. In fact, if anyone knows Corin Tucker, tell her that I want to marry her. While Corin had her most angelic voice ever, Carrie polished up those guitar skizzills, shining on almost all their material. This was definitely the best concert I’ve seen musically for a while (I think better than Zwan, because the openers were great too)… Really, check them out any time you can near you because they’re consistently one of the best live acts around.
