yeah yeah yeahs @ metro (4-30-03)
I think that everyone out there in cyber land needs to do two things right this instant: (1) go pick up the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album (which there will be a review for here soon) and (2) go see them live as soon as you can.

First on the ticket tonight was a DJ Mother Hubbard. To be quite honest, I was very much looking foward to some woman standing up on stage with turn tables and mixing decks and blah blah blah, but no such thing happened. In fact, DJ Mother Hubbard was the name given to the person who selected the music for the beginning of the show to be played (who in retrospect I have little doubt that it was Karen O herself). Luckily, there was amazing stuff blaring through the sound system: Peaches, Miss Kittin, the Faint's remixes, the Streets, the Liars, the Detachment Kit and Hot Hot Heat to name a few of the most recognizable.

The M's (a local, Chicago band) were the first band to actually PLAY. And play they did! While there were a handful of "haters" amongst the crowd, it was really hard to not be charmed by the group's psychodelic stylings of indie-pop, gracing and bluring the lines somewhere between Travis, the late Beatles and the Super Furry Animals.

The Greenhornes were another one of those mass-produced LondonDetroitNYC garage, blues-punk bands. I guess I'm getting sick of them a little, especially when the lead singers dont do anything while they're on-stage. Nothing. Except, perhaps, stare at the floor. There were some good songs, some good amounts of energy... but unfortunately, it was only potential energy that the did not channel well at all.

But the Yeah Yeah Yeahs made up for any mediocrity. The band opened with the closer off "Fever to Tell," a soft, melodic guitar driven piece known as "Modern Romance." They continued with a lot of good songs of "Fever to Tell," including "Rich" and "Man," two of my favorite tracks off the new album. Karen O went back and forth between sweet, innocent sounding vocals to controlled screams, haunting yet satisfying. She came on stage with this intense sexuality, torn fish-net stockings and constant mobility. It was a spectacle, if nothing else. The YYYs played with such intensity, it was unbelievable. I had no choice but to dance around like a madman and scream at random times. A major highlight of the show was definitely "Mystery Girl" with Karen giving such shrill screams, you couldn't help but be appauled and intrigued at the exact same time. Other highlights were "Date With the Night," "Art Star," and their finale "Tick."

Wow.

Amazing performance from an amazing band.
